Anyone have any reading recommendations for learning about game design? I imagine it is mainly a field where you learn by doing and getting feedback, but I wonder if more formal learning resources could help (short of taking a class). Resources on UI/UX design are also welcome.
Rules of Play by Salen & Zimmerman might as well be canonized at this point. However, it’s a pretty theoretical text in a lot of ways. I’ll admit I haven’t read it in full, it’s a whole ass textbook.
It occurs to me writing this that most books on game design that I know of are extremely general. That’s pretty great for new developers but I imagine it would be helpful to have more resources that discuss game design in granular, genre-specific ways. A lot of that stuff happens at GDC talks rather than in a book on the topic.
